Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) today announced that Fred Miller has been named as the new Staff Director of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.

Miller first joined the Committee staff in March 2011 as Counsel for the Subcommittee, and has worked on a variety of oversight and legislative efforts involving reauthorizations of Amtrak and passenger rail services, the Keystone XL pipeline, rail labor disputes, pipeline safety, and hazardous materials regulation, as well as surface transportation and aviation authorization bills.  Prior to joining the Committee staff, Miller served for three years as an Attorney-Advisor with the Surface Transportation Board, and two and a half years as an Attorney-Advisor with the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts working on infrastructure and security issues.  Fred also taught as an adjunct in the Law and Public Policy Program at The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law, his alma mater, and clerked for a judge on the DC Superior Court.

“Fred’s knowledge of the law and transportation policy has been an asset to this Committee.  He has been integral to our work, including the development of the Passenger Rail Reform and Investment Act, and I am pleased that he will be leading our staff as we continue our efforts to improve and reform passenger rail service in the United States,” Shuster said.

Miller is replacing Mike Friedberg, who has accepted a position with the law firm Holland and Knight.
