Washington, DC – Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) today announced that Murphie Barrett has been named Staff Director of the Highways and Transit Subcommittee.

Murphie has served as Professional Staff on the Subcommittee since joining T&I in January.  She replaces Jim Tymon, who is joining the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

“Murphie is an expert on a number of transportation policy issues, including the Federal-aid Highway Program. She was a key Senate negotiator during the MAP-21 process last Congress, and her expertise and leadership will be critical as the Committee develops the next major surface transportation reauthorization,” Shuster said.  “Jim Tymon has been an invaluable member of the Committee staff, and we wish him the very best in his new position. Our loss is most certainly AASHTO’s gain, but we are fortunate to have someone of Murphie’s caliber to ably head the Subcommittee staff and help to successfully navigate the complex surface transportation reauthorization process.”

Before joining the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee this Congress, Barrett served on the staff of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, where she advised the Committee’s Ranking Member on surface transportation and water resources policy.  Prior to that, she was a Senior Manager in the Congressional & Public Affairs Division of the U.S Chamber of Commerce and served as a policy expert on transportation issues.
