Committee Approves GSA Measures that Will Save Taxpayers $350 Million
Panel Also Approves Budget Views and Estimates
Washington, DC – The Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure today approved a number of General Services Administration (GSA) leases for federal work space that will save taxpayers over $350 million with reductions in space for federal agencies and more efficient utilization rates.
Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA), the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management – which has jurisdiction of GSA’s management of federal property – highlighted the benefits to taxpayers.
“The lease resolutions before us today will save the taxpayer more than $350 million over the terms of the leases,” Barletta said. “These savings are realized by reducing the space footprint of agencies, putting more people into less space, or lowering rental rates. And, because of the work of this Committee, agencies are finally getting the message that we cannot operate as if it is business as usual.”

The Committee also approved its Views and Estimates of the Fiscal Year 2014 budget, which are required under current law and House rules to be submitted to the Committee on the Budget.
“The Views and Estimates reflect the Committee’s belief that investment in transportation infrastructure is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, increase economic growth, and maintain our global economic competitiveness,” said Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Bill Shuster. The Committee also approved H. Con. Res. 18, Authorizing the use of the Capitol Grounds for the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service; and H. Con. Res. 19, Authorizing the use of the Capitol Grounds for the Greater Washington Soap Box Derby.
