Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) released the following statement today in regard to the Administration’s announced safety actions relating to the transportation of hazardous materials and crude oil by rail:

“I wish the Administration had released the long-overdue comprehensive crude oil by rail final rule this morning, but these actions should help improve crude by rail safety.  As I noted at this week’s hearing on the issue, safety is the Committee’s top priority.  While I understand that adjusting regulations to changing market conditions is a complicated task, and I appreciate the Administration’s holistic approach to enhancing safety, the fact remains that new standards were proposed in 2011 and the Administration has been slow to address the increased movement of crude by rail.”

Note: Earlier this week, the Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee held a hearing on the status of the pending safety rulemakings.  More information from this hearing is available here.
